Tuesday was Labor Day. It was supposed to be a day of rest, but turned into a day of protest for workers and students. More than 3,000 from dozens of labor groups and organizations gathered to express their anger toward the Ma administration over rising costs and stagnant salaries.

Unions and labor groups gathered in Liberty Square today for a Labor Day protest. They are upset over President Ma Ying-jeou’s labor policies, in particular the designated responsibility clause, which allows for excessive hours, and the skyrocketing price of goods.

Also close to 200 students gathered in front of the Ministry of Education to protest. They are angry that higher tuition costs are saddling students who have not yet begun work with debt.

Based on what my friends are going through now, I worry that I won’t be able to find a job in the future. Large companies are just looking for three or four people to fill positions, but several hundred apply.

Today there were at least 56 labor groups and other organizations protesting, including more than 3,000 workers and students. The numbers exceeded expectations.
