MAKING HIS MARK:Yang Ching-hui received wide praise for his delicate tattoo technique and his aesthetic composition at the international event

A Taiwanese tattoo artist who has raised the nation’s international profile with artwork featuring Japanese mythical figures was crowned champion at an international tattoo competition in Germany early last month.
Yang Ching-hui (楊清暉), of Taoyuan County, competed against more than 600 tattoo masters from 20 countries at this year’s International Tattoo Convention in Frankfurt, Germany, which was held from March 30 to April 1.
Yang gained a wide following after winning a number of awards at several international tattoo events, including in Singapore, China and Canada.
Yang chose Japanese mythical characters as the theme of his works for the Frankfurt convention.
During the convention, Yang could be seen giving tattoos in vibrant colors on models’ chests, backs and thighs, while they lay above various Japanese-style patterns, such as chrysanthemum flowers and carp.
Yang’s delicate tattoo techniques and the aesthetic compositions of his works were widely praised by the judges, who awarded him first prize in the category of “Meisttatowierter Mann,” or large-area tattoo in a men’s group.
“Being able to increase Taiwan’s international popularity through my work is the best part of all this,” Yang said.
